Are you a Mac fan? Do you want your GNOME desktop to look like mine? Then you need my tutorial on How to make GNOME look like macOS. It will rekindle your love of macOS, and it’s completely, 100% FREE!!! Keep on reading for details.
Extensions you’ll need:
First, you’ll need to open the terminal and type the following: sudo apt install chrome-gnome-shell
. This also applies if you use Firefox. Once the process is finished, you’ll have an Chrome/Firefox extension that gives you a direct link to the GNOME extensions repository. Once here, find and install the following:
Dash-to-Dock
This will turn the GNOME dash into a Dock that both looks and behaves like the macOS one.
TopIcons Plus
This moves the icons that would usually be on the bottom up to the top, like on macOS.
Now, check if you have an app called “Tweak Tool” installed. If you do, great! If you don’t, go back to the terminal and type: sudo apt install tweak-tool
. Now, open the Tweak Tool and click Extensions
Scroll through until you have the Dock to your liking. While you’re in the Tweak Tool, scroll down and enable User Themes
Installing a Shell Theme
First, you must head to http://b00merang.weebly.com/.
Scroll down and Click “Cupertino Collection”
Not only do they have the latest themes, like Sierra, but old themes like Cheetah and Mavericks, so choose which one you like best and click “More Info”
Now for the intesting bit. Open Files, then go to the .zip file, right-click it and click “Open with Archive Manager” Now, when it asks you to where to extract the ZIP, Hit Ctrl+H and create a folder named “.themes” (without quotations). Put the .ZIP in there so that the Tweak tool can find it. Note that you must only do this if you have never installed a theme before.
Now, open the Tweak Tool and click the “Appearance” tab, and set the Shell Theme to MacOS-Sierra-Master. But we’re not done yet
Installing a GTK theme
To macOS your desktop even more. There are plenty of macOS GTK+ themes, but my favorite is MacBuntuOS. It’s very, very easy to install. Just open the terminal and type: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/macbuntu
Once that finishes, type sudo apt get update
. Finally, type sudo apt-get install macbuntu-os-ithemes-lts-v7
. Now, open the Tweak tool, and set the GTK+ theme to MacBuntuOS.
Installing an Icon theme
To polish off that macOS look, you’ll need an icon pack. The most accurate one I’ve found is MacBuntuOS, in which case you just type: sudo apt-get install macbuntu-os-icons-lts-v7
, open the Tweak tool and set it. I, however, personally prefer the La Capitan icon theme master. To download it, visit it’s its GitHub page and click Clone or Download. Click download ZIP.
Once the ZIP has downloaded, right-click it, click Open with Archive Manager, and create a .icons folder, so that it the Tweak Tool can find it. Now, you just need to open the tweak tool and set Icons to la-capitan-icon-theme-master.
Desktop Picture
Finally, you’ll need a Mac wallpaper. If you don’t mind not having the macOS Sierra wallpaper, you can find all the others by going to The MacBuntu wallpaper Archive. If you really want macOS Sierra, get hold of a friend’s Mac. Open Finder, hit Shift+Cmd+G, and type /Library/Desktop Pictures. Select the Sierra wallpaper, and share it with yourself in some way. Put it in your Pictures folder, and you’ll be able to make it your wallpaper.
There are many more macOS packs at The Noobs Lab, so have a look around.
What macOS packs do you use? Let me know in the comments!
Useful info. Fortunate me I discovered your web site by accident, and I am

Hello would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m looking to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
