Today is World Emoji Day 2018! Hooray!

World Emoji Day? I hear you ask. What’s that? 🀨 Well, World Emoji Day is new for 2018. Held on July 17th, it celebrates the little faces we use every day. In our messages, our Facebook posts (well, you do) our online lives. July 17 was chosen because it is used on most emoji πŸ“†s. Apple, Google, Mozilla and EmojiOne (the πŸ¦„ people) all use July 17th as the dates on their calendars (Twitter uses March 21st, Facebook uses August 9th, Emojidex uses December 12th, HTC uses the 3rd of an unknown month, and Microsoft and Samsung use the 31st of [unknown]) Fun Fact: WordPress uses Twitter emoji in the editor!

So happy World Emoji Day, everyone. Take today as a chance to send Grandma a πŸ€— emoji, a friend a 😎 emoji, or a fellow geek (who cares about Emoji Day) a πŸŽ‰ emoji. Or, you could learn some emoji facts. For example, did you know iOS’s πŸ”¨ emoji used to be a gavel? Or that Facebook’s most used emoji is the πŸ˜‚ emoji? You could take the chance to share an emoji meme (the best ones are retweeted by @WorldEmojiDay, the official account for World Emoji Day). Maybe rent the Emoji Movie for a rewatch.

Whatever you do, don’t forget to check out the Emoji Awards. Voting closed last night, sadly (though I managed to get my vote in!), but the results will be released at 20:20 UCT (GMT). So, let me conclude this (admittedly rather short) post with a last rendition of πŸ˜ŠπŸŒπŸ˜€πŸ“† (Happy World Emoji Day πŸ˜‰).
